Sometimes it seems as if life overwhelms us. It’s as if all the bad things happen all at one time and we seem to be bombarded with bad news. Life seems heavy and it seems as if there is now way out of the situations we find ourselves in.
When life is like that it is very hard to notice all the good things around us and to focus on them.
If you find yourself in a situation where you can only see the bad and the wrong all around you, the chances are that you are sufferring from what I call the “Trash Can” syndrome. The “Trash Can Syndrome” is like putting your head inside a trash can and trying to find something in there that is wholesome and good and pure and inspiring. So you wade through the rubbish trying to find the best of what’s in there in the hope that its going to make you feel better.
Sadly there is nothing in there that will satisfy you.
In order to see the blue sky above and the green fields around, hear the birds singing and the rustling of the breeze in the trees, you will need to get your head out of the trash can.
Unfortunately the reverse is also true. Sometimes we find ourselves in a open park with God’s beauty all around and yet we seek out the first “Trash Can” we can find and dive straight in. It’s as if we choose to shut off the “real” fulfilling stuff in life and rather choose to explore the “trash” of life.
No one in their right mind would dive into a trash can to find something fulfilling in there and yet we do it with our lives. Many of us seek fulfillment in things like drugs, porn, alcohol, adultery, the pursuit of wealth etc etc. We feed ourselves with this junk and think it’s going to make life better. All it does actually, is make life worse.
In order to lead a fulfilling life, we need to stay clear of the “Trash Cans”, we need to get our head out of the “Trash Can” and only then can we find the real beauty, the real fulfillment in life and in living. The choice, however, is entirely ours. What will you do?
No matter who you are or what religious orientation you are from, the way of Jesus Christ is the very best way to live. His example and teachings are something that we should all be trying to follow.
Following that is the way to life and life in all its fulness. It’ll keep your head out of the trash can and your life in line with Gods will and purpose for you in the world.
