Shocktober #3 - Grindhouse Double Feature

They Call Her One Eye

Thriller or They Call Her One Eye

Release Date: 1974

Starring: Cristina Lindberg

Director: Bo Amme Vibenius

Rated X

What to say about thriller? Oh, right. That not many people have heard of this swedish coming of age story. Our main character, Frigga(played by Cristina Lindberg), is abducted and taken from her small farm family when she’s tries to hitchhike to school. Apparently this is a common occurence in early ’70s Swedish transportation. After abducted her kidnapper doesn’t ask for ransom but addicts her to heroine and turns her to a life of prostitution. This is where the X-rated part comes in to play. There are pretty hardcore sex scenes involving our main character. One scene that is important is when she refuses and in punishment for refusal her eye gets plucked out. This then leads her to a road to revenge against her captors.

Other than the sex scenes which surprised the hell out of me this film is a decent story of vengeance. Some cool trivia about the film is that Quentin Tarantino based his character Elle Driver(played by Darryl Hannah) from Kill Bill off of Frigga/One Eye. That was how I came upon this suprising foreign film. Also, another bit of trivia that made me just buy this one is when Frigga has her eye cut from her socket. This scene is extremely disturbing, morbid, and completely cut from the American theatrical release. In the scene they used a suicide victim from the local morgue. Since, suicide is something that the Swedish government deems as incredibly wrong the dead lose all rights to their body. This scene was done by a surgeon for the film ans was sanctioned by the hospital.

Scorned Friggs

If you are going to buy this one you can find it at your local Borders. One thing, though, there are two versions that are release on DVD  so you must be careful. The version I have and recommend is a limited edition DVD with a red insert. There is a special edition with a yellow insert, but I believe it is edited.

Cannibal Holocaust

Release Date:1980

Director: Ruggero Deodato

Rated X

Cannibal Holocaust is just gross. It has been banned is 13 countries for its cruel depictions of the South American tribes and cruelty to animals. Basically, it’s about a rescue team that travels to South America and try and rescue a team of filmmakers making a documentary about the cannibalistic tribes. That just sounds like a terrible idea, anyway. This one has to be seen to be believed.

The best thing about this film is that Rogerro Deodato was brought up on murder charges for this film in Italy. Ten days after premiering in Milan it was removed for obscenity and Regerro was arrested. While fighting the court system he contacted the three actors that played as the film team in the movie to prove they were not killed. That right there got me interested. One piece of trivia, Eli Roth had Deodato cameo as a cannibal in Hostel Part II. Put this one in your Netflix queue because a one time viewing is all most people can stomach.
