What’s in my brain? Too much and not enough.
Has the whole world gone crazy or is it just me? Everyday a new disaster, epidemic, protest, child-killer…poll. It’s the end of the weirdest summer ever. Poor Britain got no summer at all. Neither did the northern United States. Just when it started warming up, the first Fall leaves fell from the trees. The southern United States had the hottest, driest summer ever – setting records for being hot as shit. Texas is in the midst of a 3-year drought and we are desperate for rain. Our lakes are drying up faster than Jon Gosselin’s bank account. It’s weird out there….and it’s Back-to-School time!
So, my son started 1st grade this year and it was was Back-To-School night yesterday, where we parents sit in our child’s classroom and listen to the teacher tell us what they are doing in 1st grade now and what they’ll be doing for the rest of the year. And it’s a lot! They’re already doing multiplication and fractions in 1st grade! And at least 3 homework assignments 4 days a week. It’s like what 4th grade was for me. But it’s a good thing, because the kids don’t have a chance to get bored and cause trouble…unlike when I was in school. I was bored out of my mind – and then I caused trouble, but that’s another post.
So, the kids went back to school and what do we have waiting for them? Swine flu. Yay. We need another disaster like we need more of Spencer and Heidi. Even though I know that it’s nothing to freak out about, I think I’m still going to freak out when my son picks it up at school, (omg) which could very well happen. I talk to my son about swine flu and about how important washing his hands is, but what else can we do? It’s kind of out of our hands. Other than getting the vaccine, which I’m a little leery of, considering the last swine flu vaccine killed more people than it helped. Oops.
Oh, and the fire in Los Angeles this week? There was another disaster. My heart hurt watching my other hometown being choked by smoke and surrounded by flames. California needs a disaster right now like the Octo-Mom needs another baby…
…but it’s Labor Day weekend and after being back to school for 2 whole weeks, we are ready for a 3-day weekend! When I told my son that President Obama was going to be speaking to all school kids on Tuesday, his eyes got big. “Too all school kids?” he asked excitedly – not because he’s a big Obama supporter (because at 6 years old, politics isn’t really on his radar), but I could see that he felt special, like the President would be speaking to him and his friends directly.
Of course, I knew as we were talking, that he wouldn’t be speaking to all school kids, because some kids would be kept at home that day in protest. Other children would be sent to study hall while the speech aired and still others’ school districts had decided to not show it at all because of parent outrage. It’s just un-American in every sense of the word. Now, I know Democrats protested when Reagan and George Bush the First (as I like to call him) gave similar addresses to schoolchildren, but how freaking long ago was that? Who’s even bothered to since then? And why are Republicans protesting something that Republican presidents started? Obama’s message to kids on Tuesday will include the importance of education and staying in school. What are you saying to your children by keeping them home?
I agree that Obama has taken on too much too soon, but how can we possibly blame him when we gave him such a shitty job to do? I mean, the poor man has the weight of the world on his shoulders and the world ain’t doing so good right now. In just 9 short months, he has tackled a lot. Good for him. Isn’t it better than 8 years of domestic stagnation and global warfare? I’m sorry, I will always choose a productive, well-meaning, empathic President over a lackadaisical one who never fails to remind us how hard a job it is. Ok. It’s hard, but someone’s actually hauling the dirt and building a future instead of warmongering. Peace always wins in the end.
We need peace. We need love. I don’t know about you, but I can’t take another bombing in Iraq or Afghanistan! I’m so sick of hearing details of another gruesome murder! I can’t stand another tragic tale of child abduction! I don’t want anyone else to die from swine flu! I don’t want anyone else to die of a drug overdose! Or at the hands of the drug cartels! Or at the hands of Dr. Murray! I’m going to be sick if I hear about health-care anymore! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I want to scream!!! Make it stop!!!
Face it. We can’t win. None of us. We all lose, because we spend all of our time on this precious Earth in this fleeting life, fighting and arguing, killing and hurting – we have never learned to get along. We have never learned to live peacefully without killing each other one way or another. This is the biggest disaster of all. Go us!
